surveying for target audience

priliminary task

our preliminary task although it is not quite we hoped it would be we have succsesfully filmed and edited it incorperating
  • Shot/reverse shot
  • 180 degree rule
  • eyeline match
  • match on action
  • there are 8 separate shots and it has all been edited on final cut express on an apple imac computer
we hope that we have learnt from this, our first encounter with this technology and type of work and we hope that we can form a more complex and overall more cinematic thriller

    the techniques of filming

there are many things to take into account when film and many techniques that can be used such as carmra, sound, editing and mise en scne.

mise en scne is whats on the screen what is the image you are trying to portray and this consists of five main factor

    • costume,hair and make-up
    • body language & facial expressions
    • sound
    • settings and props
    • positioning
you can minipulate these factors into giving a happy feel or a more sad tone or make it really fast passed or more slow burning but how do we get this theory of mise en scen to work.

we have to use skills such as camra techniques like knowing the various shots nd when to use them:
    • long shot or establishing shot-where the camara is far away from the action normally at the begining of a thriller it is used for establishing the setting
    • midshot- usually used to show people to a normal scale, can be used for seens of diologue or action
    • close up-a oomed in shot at one specific thing or person to draw attention to it
    • extreme close up-usually used on peoples faces to show more deeply there emotion
    • panning shot-this is when the camara move from left to right or the other way on a fixed axis this is normally used from a far away distance as an establishing shot
    • a tiltshot-this is the oposte to a panshot this is where the camara moves upwards and downwards on a fixed axis
    • high angle shot-this is ued to mae the person on the screen seem vulnrable
    • low angle shot-this is made to make the person on the sceen look powerfull and in control

    inception

    inception

    noun

    [in singular]

the establishment or starting point of an institution or activity

yes, inception the Christopher Nolan's exillerating confusion fest staring that guy who was in a film all about a boat.inception is a psychological/action thriller staring Leonardo Di Caprio the alien kid from "Third rock from the sun" (Joseph Gorden-levitt) and Juno aka Ellen Page but apart from including alot of double barrol names what is the contence of this film? Well the main plot revolves around this idea that their are certain people like Cobb (Di Caprio)and his partner Arthur (Gorden-levitt) who can enter other peoples dreams although it never really goes into any kind of details as to how they do that. Obviously these powers were ment to be used for the greater good to benefit mankind but kobb prefers to infiltrate peoples dreams to steal their secrets and comit coporate sabotage in the begining scene he and arthur are possing as sort of dream insurence sales men for idea theft. Giving a well rehursed pretentious speech on how the world runs on ideas whilst secretly attempting to comit the crime there trying to sell pretection for.they are envetably caught in the act but instead of being repremanded they are offered an alternative a near impossible mission of inception and hence are title.so Cobb soon assembles a team to preform this impossible task of inception, the plan is to build a dream within a dream within a dream.................yeah.each person in the team is hired for a specific reason because of the skills they own much like common heist movies such as the italian job and oceans eleven so we get a mix of that and si-fi and an action thriller all in the one.although it goes mainly for the psychological aspect with the idea of dream penetration and the query of how do you know if your dreaming or not but it does have some very decent action scenes the best of witch has got to be when arthur is in the second level of the dream fighting someone in a hotel room and in the first layer his body is being hurtled around in a van so he has no centre of gravity.

    analysis of past students work

in order to learn and gain a perspective on how to film are thriller we are analysing past students work to see what they did and either try something similar are selves or make sure we dot make the same mistakes they did

this first video we looked at is titled "hide and seek" and was made by Beth Berrett, Tom Mason and Daniel Lawrence
although the acting is something to be desired the film is edited very well especially for the quick flashy cuts at the end.although there isn't meant to be much dialogue in these thrillers there is only about 2 lines in the whole film leaving a few lose ends in the plot.other than that it is a good opening to a thriller with dramatic music and the fading to black to show the credits although it does this so much that it feels like theres more credits than film time.

this next piece of coursework is unimaginatively but fittingly called the stalker the whole film is in black and white although i don't really know why there is nothing to indicate that it os set n the past or that it is a flashback so i don't get why it is.the movie starts off with slow subtitle music but then leads into a very "sienfeld" like base guitar tune as we see this young man on screen following these girls around.
